The Codemash Conference is coming up again this year in just a few weeks. It is always my favorite conference of the year, bringing together a diverse crowd of developers to learn practices from each others industries.

Presented by: Leon Gersing and Charley Baker – Leon had interesting insights about bringing agile development and BDD to the Enterprise through his work at Gap. This should be very interesting.

What Makes Ruby Different

Presented by: Joe O’Brien, Mark Peabody and Leon Gersing – Ruby is an interesting language that is growing quickly. They live and breath this stuff, and have interesting insights into what makes Ruby people tick.

WTF 2.0: A Guide to Building Social Applications

Presented by: Anthony Broad-Crawford – Anthony is the CTO for Within3, which develops social networks for the healthcare industry. I’m proud to work with them on the development of their products routinely. He’s pushing hard on the limits of social media and has a lot to share.

Ignite Cleveland 2009

This coming weekend on February 28th, Josh Walsh will be speaking at Ignite Cleveland. The event will be hosted at Lean Dog Software, a good friend of D-I who has their office on a barge overlooking a submarine… pretty cool venue.

What Is Ignite?

If you had five minutes on stage what would you say? What if you only got 20 slides and they rotated automatically after 15 seconds? Could you keep up? Around the world geeks have been putting together Ignite nights to show their answers.

Our Topic

Josh’s talk is entitled “Things we should do for our clients despite not getting paid for them” and is about building trust with clients and lifelong relationships.

Beginning Web Design Workshops

We are proud to be sponsoring a free 8-week course aimed at beginning web development with Web Standards. The course is developed by the Cleveland Web Standards Association and lead by the great Joseph James Frantz (aka Flounder/aoirthoir).

Topics

The course is aimed at beginning and aspiring web designers. We will be teaching content markup with HTML, basic content styling with CSS and more advanced CSS positioning techniques. We will be talking about good markup practices, a little bit of microformats and even some DOM manipulation with javascript.

Time and Location

The class takes place on Monday Evenings at 6:30 at our offices in Rocky River.

CWSA Looks Promising

Last night was my first opportunity to join the guys over at the Cleveland Web Standards Association, a relatively new meetup group with a goal of expanding awareness of web standards to local businesses and old-school designers – before taking over the rest of the world.

Direction

I have attended meetup’s like this before, but what stuck with me this time was the collaborative attitude. Joe started the meeting with a concise 2 minute overview of the organization, and then opened it up for discussion. 2 hours later, we stopped collaborating.

Among the many topics discussed, I found the following to be most exciting:

Business Cases and Resources which explain the business benefits of Web Standards.
Educational outreach to developers who still stuffer from table-based design.
Social networking and meeting new people who challenge each other to improve their skills.
